About the Rankin Program
The Rankin Fellowship Program is a hands-on learning program for high school and undergraduate students who are motivated to explore their interests in science and medicine. At its core, the program aims to teach students about urology as a means of introducing them to the medical field.
As a comprehensive introduction to medicine, there are two main components of the program: Clinical, and Didactics.
They will shadow multiple attending physicians and residents in both clinics and the operating room (OR), developing an understanding of the day-to-day life of a physician. Through these experiences, students will observe how doctors evaluate and treat patients, strengthen their clinical reasoning, and build foundational medical knowledge. Additionally, students will attend Grand Rounds, where Fox Chase – Temple Urologic Institute physicians and visiting professors present and discuss complex clinical cases and recent advancements in the field.
Students will reinforce and expand upon their clinical experiences through hands-on learning. During a series of interactive didactics, participants will practice fundamental medical techniques such as suturing and the use of surgical instruments, and review core principles of anatomy, physiology, and patient care. These sessions are designed to bridge observation with practice, offering students an engaging introduction to essential medical skills.
Throughout the program, Rankin scholars will attend various lectures led by faculty and staff across Fox Chase Cancer Center. This helps provide a holistic overview of components of medicine and healthcare.
